I'd say that if you rely on cluster support you should be using 5.1. NDB engine has progressed to version 7.0 and that is the current recommended version. It is miles ahead of 5.0. Cluster was removed from 5.1 so that the NDB engine could continue to progress as 5.1 stabilized. MySQL Cluster is essentially a separate product now which includes a 5.1.xx version.
Debian users dependent upon cluster should use the Linux tarball downloads http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/cluster/7.0.html#Linux_(non_RPM_packages) As you suggested in April '08 there really should be a new package like "mysql-cluster-7.0" which obsolesces the default "mysql-server-5.1" package.
Matthew, of course you're totally right, I corrected the last paragraph.
You could also check: http://www.dotdeb.org/
dotdeb has a very different strategy from debian, in that is always providing -the newest- packages for PHP and MySQL. It has a fairly big userbase of companies using it.
I am aware of dotdeb.org, but I never took a closer look at the quality of their packages. The above packages have a big advantage compared with dotdeb.org: They are fully supported by the official Debian MySQL maintainers.
we (a big web-hosting company in the uk) had big memory issues with the dotdeb php packages in the past, which could be fixed by downgrading to the php packages from lenny. to be honest, i'm not sure if it's a general problem in the newer versions of php, or a problem in the dotdeb packages. but our php developers now hate us admins for not giving them the latest bleeding edge version of php. i wish there were some kind of "semi-official" php backports, like the ones here provided for mysql.
Looking forward to see MySQL cluster 7 in debian :)
all best aNeutrino :)
grml. I am still stuck with etch but could use the new mysql. Any chance you could still provide a package for etch? Thx!
What do you recommend?, Use your semi-official backports or
apt-pinning to install the unstable version of the official sources
As I answered you on Twitter already, I recommend using the mentioned backports. If you use APT pinning to install the package from unstable on your stable box, you will need to install a lot of additional packages from unstable as well, e.g. libc6 and libncurses.
