MySQL 5.1 was uploaded to Debian unstable, and until we get it into testing, I am providing semi-official up-to-date backports of MySQL 5.1.36 and 5.0.84 for i386 and amd64 in my home directory on people.debian.org. I am providing MySQL 5.0.84 for Debian 4.0 and 5.0, and MySQL 5.1.36 for Debian 5.0. If you need MySQL 5.1.36 for Debian 4.0 as well, please let me know.

MySQL 5.0.84 for Debian 4.0:

deb http://people.debian.org/~nobse/mysql-dfsg-5.0/ etch-backports main

MySQL 5.0.84 for Debian 5.0:

deb http://people.debian.org/~nobse/mysql-dfsg-5.0/ lenny-backports main

MySQL 5.1.36 for Debian 5.0:

deb http://people.debian.org/~nobse/mysql-dfsg-5.1/ lenny-backports main

When MySQL 5.1.36 (or newer) made it into testing, I am going to move the MySQL 5.1 backport to backports.org, where it belongs. MySQL 5.0 will then completely disappear from the development branches of Debian.

Beware that the MySQL 5.1 packages do not include MySQL Cluster support, it was dropped from MySQL 5.1 a while ago, and is now available as a separate product. Unfortunately MySQL Cluster is not yet available in Debian, packaging it is one of the big items on my TODO list.

Exactly 5 years ago, on the 27th May 2003 after a discussion with my former boss and some colleagues, the domain backports.org was registered. I originally planned to write a detailed article about the last 5 years, but unfortunately didn't found the time. I'll try to catch up on this as soon as possible.

Due to hardware problems with the fibre channel controller and a read-only mounted filesystem as a result, backports.org is currently unavailable. It will last at least until tomorrow morning, just use one of our mirrors in the meanwhile.

Security support for Debian 3.1 (aka sarge) will be terminated on March 31st this year. We decided to terminate the security support for the sarge backports archive on backports.org at the same time, there will be no more updates after March 31st.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the sarge backports archive.

Today I uploaded an updated backport of the linux-2.6 package. It is based on 2.6.22-6, which was the last 2.6.22 series kernel available in Debian unstable, and includes the upstream patches from 2.6.22.12 (2.6.22.12-rc1 was included in 2.6.22-6) up to 2.6.22.18 (the user pointer access fix in get_iovec_page_array(), main reason for this update), and an update to the latest vserver patch.

For those of you who want to use MySQL 5.1 on etch, I prepared a backport from the experimental package of MySQL 5.1.22-rc. It's available for amd64 and i386, but will not be uploaded to the backports.org archive until there's a stable release in lenny.

Take a look at the list of Open Issues in MySQL 5.1 before upgrading your servers.

Santiago Vila uploaded a backport of base-files 4.0.1 to backports.org, because the package from etch doesn't include the GPLv3 license. If you're going to upload the backport of a package which software is under the GPLv3, please make sure it depends on at least the version of the base-files backport.

During the last days I prepared a GNOME 2.16 backport for etch. My primary goal was to provide the gnome-desktop-environment meta-package and all of it's dependencies. The only outstanding problem is that you have to put the packages libeel2-data and libvte-common on hold before upgrading from GNOME 2.14 to GNOME 2.16.

Beside the dependencies of the gnome-desktop-environment meta-package I also added up-to-date backports of pam-keyring, seahorse, gossip, xchat-gnome and liferea.

There was an article on Debian Times about a problem with apt 0.6 from backports.org and the key which was used to sign the new release. Beside the fact that I still don't know why this article was published without informing me about the actual problem, I fixed it yesterday in the afternoon by providing updated backports of apt and debian-archive-keyring.

Solution: Upgrade to the latest backports of apt 0.6.46.4~bpo.1 and debian-archive-keyring 2006.11.22~bpo.2.

People keep asking me why installing kernel-images from backports.org fails, and what's the workaround. The reason why installing the packages fails is a broken yaird backport. Because nobody seems interested in fixing it, I just removed yaird from the backports.org archive. Use initramfs-tools instead, it works fine.

Last weekend was quite productive. First, Joerg Jaspert updated the dak installation on backports.org, which means we can also use ~ in version numbers. What does it mean? We no longer need to lower the Debian revision of the version number, 1.2.3-4 becomes 1.2.3-4~foo instead 1.2.3-3foo. Martin F. Krafft suggested to use 1.2.3-4~bpo.1 instead 1.2.3-4~bpo1, and I like the idea, it looks indeed better. Daniel Baumann already modified the contribute page on our website.

Speaking about the website... it's now based on a wiki, thanks to Sebastian Harl, who implemented the old website design into the new Dokuwiki installation. If you want an account to edit something, just drop me a mail.
